Every Friday in our Weekend Watchdog feature, we post suggested questions for scheduled Sunday guests. You can add your own questions in the comment thread. We\’ll also include contact information for the shows, so we can let them know what their viewers want asked.
Air America\’s \”Seder on Sundays\” will air a taped broadcast this week, but we\’ll have the Weekend Watchdog Wrap-up right here on Monday.
For Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. (Fox News Sunday): Last Sunday, you said Iraq had \”turned the corner.\”
Shortly thereafter, the cease fire from Muqtada al-Sadr\’s militia unraveled, prompting clashes with the Iraqi government-backed Badr Organization militia. Both groups have ties to Iran, though Bush has directed US troops to take sides with the Badr brigades in this facet of Iraq\’s myriad of civil wars.
How is taking sides in an escalating civil war evidence of \”turning the corner?\”
For Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-CT (ABC\’s This Week): In 2003, you openly supported the establishment of permanent military bases in Iraq. Now, the Bush administration is negotiating a \”long-term strategic relationship with Iraq.\”
President Bush only says the eventual arrangement won\’t \”talk\” about permanent bases, which doesn\’t rule out the \”Korea model\” of indefinite occupation, described last year by Bush officials as including \”three or four major bases.\” And as one reporter noted this week, the planned \”agreement\” with Iraq will \”commit the U.S. to an open-ended continuation of its most momentous, and controversial, foreign-policy decision,\” without consent of Congress.
Are you happy that your goal of permanent bases is being achieved?
For CIA Director Michael Hayden (NBC\’s Meet The Press): You said in December that the hundreds of hours of interrogation videotapes that were destroyed were \”not relevant to any internal, legislative, or judicial inquiries.”
But the New York Times reports: \”in interviews in recent months with several officers involved in the decision, they said that a primary factor was the legal risks that officers shown on the tape might face.\”
Were you telling the truth in December?
